Math U See is a comprehensive K-12 math curriculum founded over 20 years ago by Steve Demme, a successful math teacher.

Math-U-See is designed to teach students specific skills in a multi-sensory way, that builds as the student progresses using a definite, logical sequence of concept instruction. This system is structured with step-by-step procedures to introduce, review, practice, and master multiplication facts. Each lesson teaches using videos, manipulatives, and other resources that are designed to appeal to any type of learner. Whatever style of homeschooling you follow, you can easily include Math-U-See in it.

Members of the Homeschool Review Crew were given the opportunity to review Accelerated Individualized Mastery (AIM) for Multiplication with a Bridge to Division. This is an instructor-guided intervention program designed for students ages 10 and older that are struggling with mastery of multiplication facts. Math U See utilizes three unique steps within this program:

  • Accelerated
The opportunity for students to move quickly through a skill set they have not yet mastered, without extra distractions.
  • Individualized
Each student is different, as are their learning preferences. Using as many approaches as possible, the program creates an environment for a student to master the skills they still need at their own pace.
  • Mastery
In this program, mastery means that a student can recall all the math facts using as little mental energy as possible to remain engaged in the process of problem-solving.

The Accelerated Individualized Mastery program takes the Math-U-See strategies combined with time-tested manipulatives to help students excel in learning.

Students who do not master these problems at a young age can and will struggle with future math levels. The AIM program helps students gain the confidence they need in math and gives them a new strategy to successfully solve more complex problems as they continue through their math journey.

Who Can Benefit

The program is designed to adapt to the student’s pace so it can take a few weeks to several months to complete. You do not need to be a current Math-U-See user to benefit from this program either.

Created for students 10 years of age and older who:

  • Have completed multiplication fact coursework without mastery
  • Are struggling as they face increasingly advanced math concepts
  • Need more effective strategies to increase fact fluency

This program will help develop major concepts and skills such as:

  • Strategies that build number sense
  • “Key” facts and “Companion” facts (application of Commutative Property)
  • Methods for fading from use of manipulatives
  • An optional section highlighting the relationship between multiplication and division
