Improve Reading Skills with LightSail for Homeschoolers

This article is in collaboration with LightSail for Homeschoolers.

LightSail for Homeschoolers is a complete language arts platform built upon LightSail Education, which has been advancing the literacy skills of students in grades K–12 since 2012. LightSail for Homeschoolers is a reading-centric, adaptive language arts platform that includes dozens of modules, hundreds of features, and thousands of pieces of content that all work together across the four pillars of literacy: reading, writing, vocabulary, and fluency

For struggling readers, LightSail’s Personalized Reader tool helps to unlock the magic of books. Whether their difficulty is due to dyslexia, ADHD, CVI (cortical visual impairment), or simple distraction, this program will help them customize their experience and access the content in the way that is best for them. Our Review Crew was blessed with one year of access for up to five children with a focus on their Premium Subscription.

LightSail partners with the World Book Encyclopedia bringing so many interactive resources to your fingertips. The entire World Book Encyclopedia is included—50,000 articles—every one of them enhanced with the seven layers of educational features such as fill-in-the-blank assessments, a full dictionary, read-aloud ability, related content, and more. Articles are revised frequently so as to ensure they are up to date and relevant. The World Book’s Atlas is also included, which links to articles, tables, and data about the world, so children can find maps and see the political, population, economic and meteorological information, at the same time exploring based upon the continent, country, state/province/region, city, or point of interest. They are also able to search out and find related articles and resources.

For all of those lovers of timelines, enjoy the World Book Timeline—an interactive database of over 650 premade timelines and 14,000+ events. Use the premade timelines, create your own and customize a timeline based upon your current studies. Timelines are a wonderful way to help our children see and organize all of these amazing events and people over time.

Lightsail also provides Memory Work Lists—you choose the content you want your children memorizing and then set up the schedule for practice and recitation. There are hundreds of premade lists to explore, including common lists from Classical and Charlotte Mason’s homeschool curriculum.

Do you just love unit studies? Create a unit study for your child or choose from one of the many that are just waiting for your kids to explore. Everyone includes related books, World Book Encyclopedia resources, essential questions, and even a quiz! There are lists related to just about everything you can think of! If you love the classics or arts and crafts, adventure, history . . . there is an endless list of places to go and people to see.

Spelling Bees is a fabulous way for your kids to build phonemic awareness and vocabulary skills using words that are exactly at their  Lexile level. As they progress the program adjusts to meet their needs. You can create and assign Spelling Bees from already created word lists or choose the words you want them to work on. You can even set the program to automatically give Spelling Bees whenever they complete a book.

Lightsail can also help improve your child’s writing skills. Using the KWL (Know—Want to Know—Learned) method the program guides children through the fundamentals of writing. Spin the wheel and see whether you will tweet, freewrite, hashtag—receive your prompt and then get writing.

Have a kid who is crazy about sports? Explore Lerner Sports! This is recommended for grades 2–5 who are developing research skills or looking for exciting sports content for hockey, basketball, gymnastics, even the Olympics!

With this program, you can create your library based upon your values so you have complete control over what your children see and read. You are able to allow or block content; you can set your account to require parental approval for your children to explore any content that may have some objectionable content. Control the assessments: fill-in-the-blank, short response and multiple-choice, Power Challenges, or Spelling Bees, you control when and how these are done. You are able to enable or disable text-to-speech, turn on or off-camera access, and more. There are so many options for how your children can use every aspect of this program and each account can be individually designed. You have all the control over all of the tools offered in this program!
