Jem Strikes Gold
In the first Goldtown Beginnings book, Jem Strikes Gold, younger readers are introduced to Jem and his sister Ellie as they try to help their Pa and Mama make ends meet. Pa is panning for gold while Mama bakes pies to sell to the other miners and businesses in the town. Most of the individuals living in the area are trying to get rich but one family is already rich. The family of Will Sterling lives in the big house and Will often interrupts Jem’s errands in town. Jem needs to find a way to deal with a bully and convince his parents that they can keep a new puppy.
Jem’s Frog Fiasco
More new words are introduced to your children in the second book, Jem’s Frog Fiasco, in the Goldtown Beginnings series. Jem is eager to provide for his new dog, Gold Nugget, and needs to find a way to pay for his dog’s food. He gets a job for Mr. Sims, the cafe owner, looking for bullfrogs for the menu. Jem’s little sister, Ellie, wants to get involved but soon goes missing. With search parties looking for his sister, Jem worries that they won’t find her and feels it is his fault for yelling at her.
To accompany the Goldtown Beginning series, you can find free educational language arts activities including coloring pages. There are also lapbooks available for purchase to accompany the books.
