Math Galaxy provides a variety of supplements that promote early math enrichment for homeschoolers. We live in an age where there are so many programs available on the web, and now we have the technology of apps that can be downloaded to a handheld device. Math Galaxy iOS apps and workbooks provide math enrichment across grade levels K–12. This availability provides homeschool families with a great amount of flexibility, which has always been a homeschool perk.

Early Math Enrichment for Homeschoolers from Math Galaxy

Teaching early math skills involves not only repetition but the ability to maintain a child’s attention. Math Galaxy has a preschool and kindergarten app for math enrichment available on an iPhone or iPad. With playful games, cute child-friendly graphics, and spoken directions, young children will definitely enjoy practicing math skills more than once a day! Worksheets and textbooks are great tools for teaching, but in many cases in order for a skill to be retained, there needs to be repetition or additional practice. Allowing your child to play a game while practicing math skills is a great way to strengthen his math skills.

Why Choose An App to Help with Math?

Math apps are a great choice to reinforce already known skills while practicing new skills. The apps provided by Math Galaxy in the App Store provide multiple games depending on the grade level. Sometimes in a homeschool setting a child’s skills might span across multiple grades, so you might not be sure which level is best for your child. Math Galaxy has a great way for parents to see an overview of the topics covered in each grade level. They have created a YouTube video for each grade level that shows a short clip of each topic covered. This is also a great way for parents to familiarize themselves with the material and how to use the app/work through the lesson.

But don’t worry, these apps can be used with minimal parental involvement. Each grade level has its own topics to cover, and they are organized with not only wording but graphics of the lesson/game. This makes it simple for children who are not reading or just beginning to read to use the app independently. Within each lesson/game the directions are verbally given, so be sure to have the volume up and on for this feature. The following are Math Galaxy iOS apps available:

These apps are a new and flexible way for older kids to practice and refine math skills without feeling the pressure of a math paper or textbook. This makes them the perfect math enrichment for homeschoolers.

Using The App For Early Math Enrichment

The Preschool & Kindergarten Math App consists of twelve different math lessons. The math topics practiced are as follows:

  • Intro to Numbers
  • Recognizing Numbers
  • Number Sequence
  • Counting
  • Part-Whole (see image below)
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Shapes & Patterns
  • Making Comparisons
  • Time
  • Money
  • Flash Cards

Now, you might be wondering, “How can I be sure my child is progressing?” Well, the app has you covered! On the home page of the app is a Scores button. Once you tap that, it will open a screen. This is where you will enter your child’s name. However, it isn’t for every lesson, on the Scores page you will see the ones that the score will be recorded on. It is a good practice to update the scores before closing out of the app so you will get the information recorded. In each lesson, the child is asked a math question. When he or she gets it correct, there is a celebration on the screen and a star is placed at the top of the screen. At five correct answers there is a very big celebration.
