Sarah Strings: Online Violin Lessons for the Whole Family

This post is in collaboration with Sarah Strings, which provides online violin lessons for the whole family.

Do you have a student who wants to learn how to play the violin? Do you want flexibility in schedule and pacing? Sarah Strings Beginner Violin Lesson Videos is an engaging, gentle, and effective online violin program.

Sarah Strings was created by Sarah Van Kleeck, a Suzuki-certified teacher with over thirty-two years of experience and a homeschool mom. The program includes five levels with seventy-two video lessons for each level.

What is Sarah Strings Beginner Violin Lesson Videos?

These lessons are prerecorded and asynchronous, so you can do them at whatever time and pace works for you and your students. Each level has twelve weeks of lessons. Each week contains five days of lessons. This is followed by an assessment for the parent to complete with the child and a quiz on the concepts taught for the week.

The week is set up with a primary instructional video on the first day, followed by review and practice videos for the rest of the week. The video lessons are short, ranging from around eight to ten minutes for the primary lesson of the week and four to six minutes for the other practice sessions. It is recommended to watch the instructional video and first practice video on the same day and then one video on each of the other days. However, it is flexible, depending on what works best for your family.

In addition to the video practice sessions, students are encouraged to spend fifteen minutes each day practicing their violin pieces. This would bring the total time spent on violin to about twenty to twenty-five minutes each day.

If a student has mastered the skills at the end of the week, she moves on to the next week, but if she needs to spend more time reviewing those skills, she can repeat the lessons from that week.

To supplement the video instruction, the instructor has included downloadable workbooks that work on memory work and basic music theory. Students are also encouraged to spend a few minutes listening to the songs each day to help with ear training.

What Will My Student Learn in the Beginner Violin Video Lessons?

The first level begins with the basics of violin instruction. Students learn concepts such as taking a bow, rest position, play position, and holding the bow. They also learn how to play the Twinkle variations. In addition, on the theory side, they learn the names and numbers of the strings.  Students continue to work through the beginning songs and works from the Suzuki violin method as they work through the five levels of this course.

Once students have completed the video classes and quizzes for a level, the parent will set the child up for an online assessment with Mrs. Van Kleeck. This allows her to ensure that the student has correctly mastered the material for that level, and then the student can move on to the next level.
