The limits of my language are the limits of my mind.  All I know is what I have words for.

Vocabulary.   Developing a solid vocabulary is important to many homeschool families for a variety of reasons.  Some are pragmatic, and want extensive vocabularies specifically so their children can do well on tests like the SAT and ACT.

Some, like Austrian philosopher Wittgenstein implies, feel that an inadequate vocabulary limits what you can learn.

Whatever the reasons, VocabAhead is one resource out there that can help families to expand their SAT-level vocabulary.

Members of the TOS Homeschool Crew received one of two products:

VocabAhead SAT Vocabulary:  Cartoons, Videos & MP3s.  This book covers 300 words in 30  units.  The book also includes access to videos and MP3s  — more on that below.  The book includes a cartoon and a story or some memorable sentences, synonyms, antonyms, and review exercises for each unit.

Photobucket

VocabAhead One Thousand SAT Vocabulary Videos & MP3s.  This DVD-ROM includes both the mp3 files, and the video files, for over a thousand words.  You can watch/listen on your computer, or put the files on an iPod, iPhone, or iPad.  Both the audio and video have the same information, except obviously you cannot see the cartoon while listening to the audio.

Memorable little stories or sentences, quirky cartoons — these combine to help students (or Mom and Dad!) expand their vocabulary.  Visit their website for sample videos, and read the reviews of the TOS Homeschool Crew to decide if  this could be an answer in your home.
