Study Guides for Literature from a Christian Perspective Review

This is sponsored content.

Are you ready to dig deeper into classic literature with your child? Progeny Press provides homeschoolers with study guides for literature, from a Christian perspective. Their mission statement is

“To teach our children to think clearly, to understand literature, and to rely on the scripture for truth and values, and enjoy themselves while they do it!”

Each literature guide is available in three versions: a physical book, a CD with a PDF ebook, or a downloadable PDF file. Some of the E-guides beyond the lower elementary level offer an interactive component, which allows students to answer questions directly on the computer.

Each study guide includes a synopsis, author information, pre-reading activities, a look at each section/chapter of the book with vocabulary, questions, and a Dig Deeper section that helps the child connect the story to life. An answer key is also provided.

Members of the Schoolhouse Review Crew had the opportunity to review a variety of study guides across all grades:

Lower Elementary/K-3rd Grade:

  • Sam the Minuteman – The story of the beginning of the American Revolution through the eyes of a little boy.
  • Miss Rumphius – A delightful story about a lady named Miss Rumphius, or the Lupine Lady, as she visited faraway places and then lived by the sea.

Upper Elementary/3rd grade-6th grade:

  • Sarah Plain and Tall – Sarah, a lady who describes herself as plain and tall, answers an ad in the paper to visit Papa, a man who wants a wife. Will she stay, or return to the home she misses so much?
  • Stone Fox – The story of Willy and Searchlight, a boy and a dog who enter a dog sledding race against Stone Fox, an Indian who has never lost.

Middle School

  • Tuck Everlasting – The story of a girl who runs away from home and learns the secret of a family that claims a spring has given them immortality.
  • Carry On, Mr. Bowditch- Nat Bowditch loves numbers but must quit school to work. He continues to educate himself and eventually begins to make a book for sailors on navigation.

High School

  • To Kill a Mockingbird – A story about two children growing up in a southern town. When their father, a lawyer, takes on a case defending a black man, they learn about prejudice in their very own town.
  • Intro to Poetry – This particular e-guide covers the types of poetry, elements of poetry, and forms of poetry.
